The Maharashtra government recently cancelled over 500 Medical Officer (Group-A) appointments after specialists failed to join despite receiving appointment orders. These included gynaecologists, paediatricians, anaesthetists, and other key specialists recruited through a selection process in early 2024.

Why Did Doctors Opt-Out?

Despite the opportunity to work in government hospitals, many doctors chose private practice or out-of-state jobs. The reasons?
🔴 Lower salaries compared to private hospitals
🔴 Heavy workload with limited support staff
🔴 Poor infrastructure in government hospitals, especially in rural areas
🔴 Delayed recruitment process, forcing doctors to take other jobs

The Impact on Public Healthcare

With a severe shortage of doctors, rural and district hospitals are struggling to provide essential services. Many facilities lack specialists, forcing patients to travel long distances for treatment.

💡 A survey found that 22 out of 38 rural hospitals in Maharashtra stopped conducting C-sections due to a lack of specialists! Routine surgeries remain unavailable in 17 districts.

What Needs to Change?

To retain skilled doctors and strengthen public healthcare, systemic changes are needed:
✅ Competitive salaries to match private sector pay
✅ Better infrastructure & medical equipment
✅ Faster and more efficient hiring processes
✅ Incentives for doctors to serve in rural areas

Maharashtra’s healthcare system is at a crossroads. Will the government take action to fix these issues? Or will the crisis continue, leaving millions without access to proper medical care?
